Hiking the Northwoods!

A group of fine folks recently visited us here at Northwoods Outfitters. They wanted to bypass the adreneline rush of water-water rafting and just experience nature firsthand. Our sales personnel were able to help some of them update their rustic walking sticks with state-of-the-art Trekking poles that help cushion impact on their knees. They also picked up one of our hottest selling books, written by one of our own guides, "North Woods Walks - A Collection of Hikes in Northern Maine" - which is now in its second edition. From this book, these folks chose to hike Little Moose Mountain. A camera is a valuable asset for this walk. Not only were these people raving about the views and up-close encounters with nature - but, supplied us with a photo of the breath-taking view from the top! 5-Day Allagash Canoe/Camping Trip

Allagash Trip – May 17-21, 2010
From Master Maine Guide – Mark Patterson
I had 3 clients with me for this 5-day Allagash canoe trips/camping trip. Putting in at Bissonnette Bridge, we spent day one fighting a head wind – only making it to Chislom Brook to set up camp for the night. Late in the evening, the wind died down and we were lulled to sleep by the familiar call of the migrating Snipe. On day two, the wind had shifted and a nice tail breeze pushed us through the long lake section to Long Lake Dam. This allowed us to troll fish along the way – picking up several Brook Trout, the largest being 15”. The clients also got some nice photos of a Maine Moose swimming across Umsaskis Lake!
On our third night, we spent the evening at my favorite campsite at Round Pond. I made campsite pizza, which turned out to be one of their favorite meals (along with blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup!) Just before dark, a curious small Moose hung around our canoes – sticking around till our snoring ran him off!
Day four netted more Brook Trout and breath-taking views of Maine’s north country! We spent our last night at Allagash Falls, sleeping soundly to the melody of falling water. In the morning, we celebrated with a breakfast of fresh apple pie! While loading up the canoes, I thought I sighted an elusive Muskie below the Allagash Falls – but, it turned out to be a local Beaver who seemed a bit irritated with our lollygagging around!

Mid-May Remote Pond Fishing

A recent half-day guided trip of remote pond fishing yielded great results! We caught approximately twenty native Brook Trout ranging in size from 6” to 16”. It was a relaxing and beautiful night on the pond with no wind to disturb the tranquility. To cap off a great fishing trip, we also saw 9 Moose, 3 Deer, and a Red Fox. It was the perfect Northwoods adventure!

Moose Mania Time! Moosehead lake

Each year those of us here in the Moosehead Lake Region gear up for our annual “Moose Mania” celebration which runs from May 15th through June 12th. During this enjoyable season, Greenville holds various activities for the community and the many visitors who come to view the majestic Maine Moose! Here at Northwoods Outfitters, our Registered Guides are keeping track of the hungry gangly creatures that are making their way out of the dense forest and into prime feeding areas to fatten up after the long winter.
In just the past week, our guided trips have already landed great results! In addition to multiple Moose sightings, our clients have seen Deer, Turkey, Ruffed Grouse, Snowshoe Hare, and Red Fox! One of the trips even experienced a Mink cross right in front of them!

On our guided ATV tour last September brought on some unseasonable chilly weather for this time of the year. This photo is from the trail behind the Moose Mountain Inn leading to the Moose Mountain Loop. The group had a great time on our 40 mile ride. We have Polaris 400 and 500 Sportsman models for one or two person riding. Give us a call for rental availability and guided tours. Or click here for a direct link to the information page.
