5-Day Allagash Canoe/Camping Trip

Allagash Trip – May 17-21, 2010
From Master Maine Guide – Mark Patterson
I had 3 clients with me for this 5-day Allagash canoe trips/camping trip. Putting in at Bissonnette Bridge, we spent day one fighting a head wind – only making it to Chislom Brook to set up camp for the night. Late in the evening, the wind died down and we were lulled to sleep by the familiar call of the migrating Snipe. On day two, the wind had shifted and a nice tail breeze pushed us through the long lake section to Long Lake Dam. This allowed us to troll fish along the way – picking up several Brook Trout, the largest being 15”. The clients also got some nice photos of a Maine Moose swimming across Umsaskis Lake!
On our third night, we spent the evening at my favorite campsite at Round Pond. I made campsite pizza, which turned out to be one of their favorite meals (along with blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup!) Just before dark, a curious small Moose hung around our canoes – sticking around till our snoring ran him off!
Day four netted more Brook Trout and breath-taking views of Maine’s north country! We spent our last night at Allagash Falls, sleeping soundly to the melody of falling water. In the morning, we celebrated with a breakfast of fresh apple pie! While loading up the canoes, I thought I sighted an elusive Muskie below the Allagash Falls – but, it turned out to be a local Beaver who seemed a bit irritated with our lollygagging around!
